Major Somnath Sharma, even though his left hand was injured, led his D Company of 90 soldiers against about 500 enemies.
He showed great courage, guided air strikes, and encouraged his men to fight bravely. Even when asked to retreat, he said, “I shall not withdraw an inch but will fight to the last man and the last round.” He was killed by a mortar shell, but his men held their position for hours, giving time for reinforcements to arrive. His sacrifice saved Srinagar and Kashmir for India.
