Sentila was a young girl who wanted to become a pot maker like her mother and grandmother. But Sentila’s mother, Arenla, wanted her to learn weaving because weaving is easy to learn and earning is also more as compared to pot making. Sentila secretly watched potters, how they are shaping clay into pots. The village elders told Arenla that pot making is an old tradition and she has to teach her daughter. So Arenla started teaching Sentila how to make pots. But Sentila found it very hard, and she could not shape the clay properly into pots; she had tried many times.
Sentila went to stay in the girls’ dormitory. There she meets with one kind woman named Onula. Onula saw sentila she is trying to make pots,Sentila; but she is not able to make a proper pot. Onula gave a confidence and also helped Sentila how to make a pot. Sentila slowly learned the skill.
Later, Sentila carefully watched her mother shape the pots. One day, when Sentila’s mother left her alone to work, Sentila made many pots by herself, and this pot looked almost the same as how her mother made the pots. Sadly, on the same day, her mother Arenla died. The villagers were shocked. But Onula understood that something important had happened – Sentila had finally become a true pot maker. She would now continue her family tradition of pot-making.
The story of Quality Class 9 Notes
The narrator knew Mr. Gessler, who was a shoemaker in London. The narrator knew Mr. Gessler because he made the narrator’s father’s boots in his childhood time. The Gessler brother had a small shop where he made only custom boots. Their boots were strong, long-lasting, and perfectly fitted.
Mr. Gessler treated boot-making as an art. He always uses the best leather carefully for making boots. He never does as advertised, just like a big company, due to his business always suffering. One day the narrator wore boots from another shop, and Mr. Gessler sadly said that the big company doesn’t focus on the quality of boots, and they are only taking away work from small craftsmen like him.
The narrator noticed that Mr. Gessler is very hardworking, working without taking rest, food, or money. His boots’ quality is good and long-lasting because he works alone and slowly. The customer wants cheaper boots and wants the readymade boot. Over time, Mr. Gessler’s brother died, and Mr. Gessler himself grew old, weak, and poor.
Finally, the narrator learned that Mr. Gessler sacrificed his health and comfort for the sake of quality. He suffered, but he never compromised on his work.
