Location

  • India is located entirely in the Northern Hemisphere.

  • The country extends between latitudes 8°4’N and 37°6’N and longitudes 68°7’E and 97°25’E.
  • The Tropic of Cancer (23°30’N) divides India into two equal parts.

Size

  • India is the 7th largest country in the world, covering an area of approximately 2.4% of the total geographical area of the world.
  • India has a boundary of 15,200 km and a coastal boundary of 7,516.6 km, including the coastal areas of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the Lakshadweep Islands.
  • India also have a bounded by mountains from the northwest, north and northeast. South of approximately 22° north latitude, the country tapers towards the Indian Ocean, which is divided into the Arabian Sea on the west and the Bay of Bengal on the east.
  • The Standard Meridian of India (82°30’E) passes through Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh and is used as the standard time for the country.
