Nowadays, all the work can be done using a computer because it is easy, accurate, and fast, and we can store data for a long time. In traditional times, people did a task manually, which was slow and prone to errors. So, scientists have developed fast calculating devices like computers, which can easily handle the big data and easily rectify the errors. Computer is a term derived from the term ‘compute’, which means to calculate.
Computers take input from the user and give the output as per the instructions given by the user. In this chapter you are going to learn Unit 1: Computer Organisation, Unit 2: Network and Internet, Unit 3: Office Automation Tools, Unit 4: RDBMS and Unit 5: Fundamentals of Java.
In Unit 1 the students will understand the introduction of computers, the evolution of computers, characteristics of a computer, components of a computer, what is inside the computer, input and output devices, operating systems, types of operating systems, troubleshooting hardware problems, troubleshooting software, troubleshooting networks, etc.
In Unit 2 the students will understand computer networking, the internet and its terminology, and cyber threats and cybersecurity. In Unit 2 students will understand the evolution of computer networks and the internet, computer networks, transmission mediums, network devices, network types, topology, the internet and its terminology and how the internet is helping in relearning and digital literacy, internet services and several applications of the internet, and different types of internet protocols used and how these protocols are helpful for communication. Cyber threats and cybersecurity are also given in the textbook, where students will learn how to protect themselves.
In Unit 3 the students will understand how OpenOffice Writer is useful in day-to-day life, the OpenOffice screen and its components, the main features of OpenOffice Calc, how to work in spreadsheets, working with data, formatting data, finding and replacing, how to delete the cell, row or column, different types of formulas and functions, sorting and filtering data, creating charts and graphs, macros, OpenOffice Impress components, etc.
In Unit 4 the students will understand the above relational database management system, introduction to MySQL and DML commands. The students will know about what a database is and how the database is managed, what a relational database is, RDBMS terminology, an introduction to MySQL, categories of SQL commands, MySQL data types, creating a database, and different types of SQL commands like creating a table, viewing a table, modifying a table, altering a table, select statements, insert statements, update statements and delete statements, etc.
In Unit 5 the students will learn components of IDE, Understand and change properties and methods of components like jButton, jLabel, jTextField, jTextArea, jRadioButton, jCheckbox, jPasswordField, jListBox, and jComboBox. Introduction to Object-Orientated Programming, To understand various data types (primitive) and the purpose of each data type, To understand the need and usage of variables, To understand usage of operators (assignment, arithmetic, relational, logical, bitwise).
To understand how to attach a code with components like jButton, jLabel, and jTextField and create a simple application on JFrame, To understand the use of various components like jTextarea, jRadiobutton, jCheckbox, jPasswordField, jListBox, jComboBox, JTable, JOptionPane, and JPanel, and to understand when to use selection statements (if, if else and switch case)
Computers work on electronic signals on and off, which are represented as 0 and 1, which is also known as binary language or machine language.
