Psychology helps the athletes:
- Stay mentally strong and focused.
- Improve performance through mental training.
- Stay motivated and confident.
- Handle pressure and stress.
- Recover better from injuries.
Developmental Characteristics at Different Stages of Development
Growth and development of human beings is a natural process that brings changes in mental, emotional, social, physical, and moral aspects of life. Growth and development are complementary to each other for human well-being.
- Physical development: It is about how the body grows and changes from birth to old age. In physical development, height, weight, flexibility, strength, and motor skills are included.
- Cognitive development: It is about how the brain works, like thinking, learning, memory, decision-making, etc.
- Social development: In this, a person interacts with others and learns to live in society, like building relationships, understanding social rules, etc.
- Emotional development: It is about how you recognise and manage feelings. Good emotional development leads to a balanced personality and better mental health.
Adolescent Problems & Their Management
As per the World Health Organisation (WHO), defining adolescence is the stage between 10 and 19 years. It is a time when children begin to grow into adults, including physical, emotional, social, and mental changes.
Adolescents often face peer pressure, curiosity, or stress, which may lead them to experiment with substances like alcohol, tobacco, or drugs. These substances can harm mental and physical health. Adolescents face the following challenges:
- Eating Disorders: This is a psychological issue like anxiety or depression.
- Anti-Social Behaviour: Aggression or rebelliousness may emerge from inner conflicts, rapid physical changes, and lack of emotional support.
- Exercise Adherence: Adolescents can benefit from exercise, but due to stress, low motivation, or social distraction, the adolescents can drop physical activity, which will affect overall development and well-being.
- Adherence Management: Support from family, teachers, coaches, and trainers is essential towards helping adolescents towards exercise adherence as an essential component of life.
Team Cohesion and Sports
Team cohesion refers to how the team members work together toward shared goals and how connected they feel to one another emotionally and socially.
There are two key types of cohesion:
- Task Cohesion: This is teamwork to achieve a common goal. For example, a football team aiming to win a championship needs every player to understand their role in the game.
- Social Cohesion: It shows how the team are bound with each other. When the player required support at the time of the game, the others were supportive. It helps to boost morale and create a positive team environment.
Why It Is Important
- Improves performance
- Boosts motivation
- Reduces conflict
Introduction to Psychological Attributes: Attention, Resilience, Mental Toughness
- Attention: In the game, attention helps you to concentrate and ignore distraction. It is about how well you are focused on something.
- Resilience: Resilience is your ability to get back up after something goes wrong. If you lose a match, resilience helps you try again instead of giving up.
- Mental Toughness: It shows mentally how strong you are. It helps to stay cool even when things get hard.
